#RED ROCK 10 GALLUP NM FULL#
We picked no amenities one day and full amenities the next. We enjoyed our stay here very much because it was not super crowded, had a picnic table, easy to pull our camper through, and convenient to northeastern New Mexico tourist sites.Īll sites have full electric and water but not waste hookup. We were pulling a camper behind a truck and spent a total of two nights here. My sister and I found this place after discovering the campgrounds at the National Park nearby was closed. It was neat to visit the museum and see the rock formations up close but not worth the diversion from the interstate as you have to exit I-40 well before the park and drive Route 66 paralleling I-40 to get to the park and again paralleling I-40 for quite a while once you leave to get back on the interstate. So many people had written their names, etc. The rocks are a red limestone, very soft.

The museum was a nice surprise with neat Indian displays and real bathrooms! There were many other offices there but no one was there. To our surprise, one worker was there – on the phone chatting with someone like you would if talking to a friend – and didn’t pause to greet us. We were shocked to find it unlocked since the area was abandoned and we were the only ones there. We went inside the walk way anyway and around the corner a sign said Museum on the building.

There were construction barricades up so we weren’t sure if they were to block the whole walk way of just a section near the building. It said it was the convention center but all the doors were locked. So we drove to the next parking lot and saw a bigger building. Well, the brown building in that area ended up being outhouses. We stopped at the first building with a great view of Church Rock from the parking lot but it was only a post office so she told us we had to go to the museum in brown building. We stopped at this park but it was hard to find where we should be. The peak/summit is large and flat (take a picnic to the top!), have a rest and enjoy the 360 degree views of the surrounding area. Once you leave the trailhead there's no water source(s), "facilities" or shade (take sunscreen, hat, water.!) There's no on your "hands & knees" stuff, though as on any dirt hill with a few steep parts you'll want to be alert to sliding on the loose dirt/sand. Technically, you only need to be able to walk up a dirt trail (steep at times). Once you're in the park, the signs/directions to the trailhead are very good and there's plenty of parking. We (my wife & I) did this trail at a very relaxed pace in 3 hours (stopping many times for photos & to take in the views). It is a 3 mile roundtrip hike with a gain in elevation of a little over 800ft to its peak of nearly 7,500ft. This hike is located within Red Rock State Park (on the outskirts of Gallup, NM). The views are amazing and the trail is well laid out. I would recommend this hike to anyone in the area and would also say if you could do only one thing while in the Gallup area, do this hike.
